I have some markings on the butt plate of a Gew98 that Mauser99 and I have different ideas on. Pictures below.

The rifle is a 1916 Danzig, not import marked, 20 matching numbers (1788/88), with a different serial numbered (4956) matching two piece walnut stock. It was my thought that the markings were Imperial Proofs with the '17' indicating 1917 stock date. Mauser99 thinks the stock is 1916 (two piece, take down disks, no finger grooves) with regimental markings. Any other opinions?

Minor correction: apparently the stock assy doesn't match the rest of the piece. To my mind that indicates the stock was replaced using a Saxon stock. c/B = an inspector stamp, where B= last name of inspector.
