I saw a gew 98 rilfe in "fair" condition, rather rough wood unsanded with about 60 pct of the blueing left matching bolt. I believe that it was a 1901 date. What are the values for these rifles? The asking price was 199.00, what did I pass on?

simsonsuhl is about the best you will find here regarding early models but without more info like manufacturer, etc., you will have a very hard time getting answers. try and post photos.

This is a rifle I left at a gunshop, no pic. I do not recall the manufacturer (did not want to tip my hand to the seller that had not yet stated a price) I am looking for a wide ballpark idea of a fair price.

So its a full 360 then.. a complete circle. Took 3 days but you finally did it..

You are unquestionably the most unstable ball of emotion I have ever encountered, and never have I met a “man” so emotionally unstable?

Its unfortunate you had to step into this little scene, but I will answer your question.

The mfg is not terribly important in this case; it could be one of any of the 5 arsenals/commercial firms that made rifles that year. None are appreciably scarcer then the others, the only real issue is you would have to determine "originality" for an est. on value. Total original to 1901, no rework its going to be very valuable, post 1918 depends on many things..

Get the length, what is blued, what is "bright", and make note of any marks other than the mfg/1901, (for instance does it have a "1920" property mark, what does the right receiver look like? It markings, describe them, what kind of "proof" does it have if it has one at all? The eagle on the left receiver and possibly barrel if post 1918 re-barrel)

Really you need to describe it better but "generally" $199 its hard to go too wrong as a sum of parts are "probably" worth the $200.

hey simson fool, make sure you tell him that a sum of parts is not collectible. ah, err, junk as you would say. but make sure before you insult him that you do get the barrel codes for your own benefit.

I dare say that for every barrel code or worthwhile information I get I have to answer 10 questions no one else here can (you for instance) or will (many know the answers but don't bother to endure fools such as yourself..)

Hi chw,

Pardon the rancor in the responses....Award and SimsonSuhl are involved in some sort of "Who can Pee higher on the Tree" discussions in other threads, and it spilled over onto this thread....please don't get the wrong idea from the extraneous posts...Simson did answer your question...and he is the TOP man on this subject. I will also echo his thought that you can't hardly go wrong for $199.

Maybe you would like to make this a signature award? You use it enough.. probably because you can’t answer a question?

What is a creature that lives off another?

well to answer your question it would be you and in many different ways. i think i will give you a few options to call yourself. a flea, fly, tick or maybe just lice(lice being plural form because you can include both brain cells). so to answer it you live off another creature. wait, you are a chimp so i must be wrong.

Nice thread hijack from a couple kids, why don't you two download Yahoo, and argue there. Maybe someday you'll find out that "arguing on the internet is like the special olympics, win or lose, you are still retarded".

My $0.02

That, my friend, is funny!
I do believe this thread had deviated from the original post by a longshot.
Way to go, guys. Impressive.

The problem is that this site can afford to lose award as he has a bad habit of spewing false information with conviction.

I hate to break it down like this but for the most part; people that don’t even own a complete 100% matching K98 shouldn’t be posting information like they have the same experience that the more seasoned collectors on this site have. New guys have a hard time distinguishing the knowledgeable collectors from the wanna-bees..

GEW98

200.00 dollars for any Mauser is a deal. You mentioned that the bolt matched the receiver. In a best case scenario you have an all matching
Gew98 that is an early prewar piece it could be worth 700.00 - 800.00 dollars easy in fair condition. It could be worth more depending on if it was never reworked post 1901.

Thanks, it was a good response.
