Hello,
I have seen for sale surplus plastic screw top dishes being sold as lard dishes. There also is a post-war metal version. What type of lard would have these been used for? How would they have eaten this? I'm not familiar with any food product of that sort.

The lard is rendered fat, ie Crisco . It was used as a spread for bread rations with a little salt sprinkled on top. The lard dishes were standard issue. The ones that are orange in color are post war . War time ones can be black or brown colored bakalite
