BC, I know nothing about old dog tags but have seen a couple originals from WWI. They were made of zinc and certainly had the person's name stamped upon them, there was more information on them but don't remember what it was.
Maybe a tag to identify your mission and archived at the company (like e.g. a police shield). "Infanterie Nachrichten, Ersatz Kompanie 58" could be right.

Hey Bayonet collector, I am unsure of the vintage of this tag, but it is not a personal ID dics, even though it is the correct size and type, I agree with the Belgian that it should be zinc, and it should have the soldier's name and home town, this is (in my opinion) an Identifacation disc for some sort of equipment rather than a person.
Best wishes
Gus

Just a tought. I can imagine that "civilians" like journalists, photographers etc. and while doing their work could be identified. A temporary identification that was turned in after the job was done and reissued to one of the next "visitors" (in combination with an "Ausweis" on paper and a lot of inkstamps :p)?
