Saw some French M1 Carbine ammo while out of town the other day but didn't buy it unfortunately. It was made by the same people who made the MAS 36 ammo. The labels looked very similiar. When did the French use M1 Carbines? In Vietnam? Anyone have a picture of a box of French M1 Carbine ammo or a French owned M1 Carbine?

We started providing the Froggies with M1/M2 Carbines during the 2nd Great Disagreement and continued to do so in the post war years. They saw wide service in Vietnam and Algeria where they were very popular with the Foreign Legion airborne units and the regular army Paras. I have also seen photos from the 1970s of members of the Gendarmerie Nationale armed with M1 Carbines.

Cool pics, thanks. I wonder what they did with them? You don't see to many imported surplus rifles coming from France anymore. You'd think they'd have a ton of K98s too. The picture of the guy with the MG 42 and k98s, where is that from? Algeria?
Thanks,

You will not see any surplus coming from France any more...unless the current French government decided to tell the UN to go to hell. The French signed onto the UN Surplus Arms agreements mandating that they destroy rather than sell off their surplus weapons and munitions.

French ammo

Be glad you passed. I have heard from numerous sources that their .30 carbine ammo is corrosive. If you don't want to tear your carbine down every time, don't use it. I have many boxes, and won't use it.

Yes, the 2nd photo is from Algeria. The Legionairre with the M1 Carbine is escorting a prisoner who is also carrying a load of weapons they captured from the terrorists. Some selection, eh?

Yup, some SMLEs also. Apparently the Algerian terrorists (and the Legion for that matter) used almost anything they could ge their hands on.
