french capture K98K or polish modification

2568 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Turbo Archie
I saw on an auction a nice K98K that was advertised as a french capture rifle, the only thing leading to that conclusion was the modification of the stock to also have the french style sling bar behind the normal stock cutout, I've seen this style of bar on my two polish rifles, is there any credence to these french capture and modified rifles or is this most likely a polish modification? The auction is still live so I won't post where it is.

What is the code/year on the receiver? The inter-war Polish Mausers did have a sling bar like that, but a ww2 German K98k would not have been modified by the Polish. The French did modify the stocks like that on most of the K98k's in their possesion after the war, as well as the ones made briefly under their control at Mauser Oberndorf.
I believe it was a byf 41 and I was thinking that it might not make sense for the poles to modify a rifle during the war.....thanks.

Any weapons related repairs or modifications done in occupied Polish facilities on German equipment would have been under German supervision. The work would have been done to conform to their standards and since that type of sling mount was not the style they used, not a likely mod. by them.
The weapons "modified" by the Poles were for the most part repatriated K98a. They were a short rifle and carried the designate Wz29. They didn't have the cupped buttplate or the cutout above the takedown disc. Those destined for export (mainly to Spain) had the receivers scrubbed.
Yes, I have one of each of these, a wz29 and an sc marked K98az..that's what got me thinking.....wrongly apparently:)

Typical French modification, I've owned a few that were modified like this.
I saw one just like that at the VGCA gun show last week end, same condition, $600 I believe it was also byf 42

I'm thinking that also.
