What is MRD please? Manufacturing date? The spine says Steyr 1886 but I think the entire production has the same marking and not the actual year. I was not aware of the carbine difference, thanks!

Thanks! muzzle ring is 16 mm -ish, or just below 17 mm (don't have a caliper)

would you think it is sandblasted or wirebrushed recently in the collectible trade or during service/re-furb? It is pretty obvious some layers have been removed, as the Steyr 1886 mark is partilly faint. On the other hand, I find it strange there is no edge-effect after sanding: I'd image if you sand the blade, the crossguard would protect the bottom of the blade so that there would be more thickness in that area

I read that 17.4 mm ones are for another gun. Could it be that (pulling out of my *** here) during the conversion to smokeless powder some barrels got replaced by a smaller one?
