After a few years away from actively persueing my Mauser collection (got side tracked with my corvette) I decided to jump back in and bought a 1901 Danzig Gew98. Should have it in hand next week. So I decided to pull my modest collection out of the safe and do a little rearranging so that I can have the collection better at hand.

The interesting part is that I have things I forgot I had (not one but two ZAR 1895's). I thought my 1895 Chilean Carbine was a poor condition mixmaster, turns out it's very good condition and all matching. Thought I had at least one 1896 Swede, turns out I had none. My 1891 Argie is all matching, thought it was not. And finally didn't realise I had two 1893 Spanish Lowe Rifles.

Shows how long it's been. (at least 6 years) It's been interesting reading all the recent posts and seeing so many folks in the Mauser community are still active.

I'm continuing the focus on pre-1900 Spanish and South Americans and now throwing in some WWI Germans. (since that is my heritage) I look forward to learning more from all the great folks here.

Hi Hans,

Welcome back. Six years ago my collection was in limbo. I had not bought a gun since July 2004.

But since April 2009 I have been very actively collecting. It goes in cycles. This cycle started when I discovered Gunboards and Gunbroker.

You can make up a Mauser want list by reviewing the sticky "Mausers, Only Mausers".

I cant even walk into the vault anymore : ( ...I'm all ready for a big renovation but work (Thank goodness!) has been keeping me busy 7 days a week for several months now..I renovated another room and the only place I had left to put an antique desk was the small open spot as you walk into the vault.. I have at least 5 rifles I need to move along due to upgrades and 3 were bought as trade fodder..(a dangerouse thing as I often can find a good excuse for keeping them : )..I have boxes and boxes of trade items that I cant get to...I'm sure I dont remember half of what I picked up in the last 2 years..I'm itching to remake my gunroom but I need at least a weekend just to empty it out and get started..Last time I did a big inventory was 5 years ago when I was crutching around after a MVA that took my right leg off but for some muscle and a skin flap..That bit woke me up to the fact that I needed to label things for my kids so just in case they could sell stuff off with at least a descrip of what the things were!

Labeling is a good idea. I have all the guns labeled on a hang tag with the name/model, serial number, and collection number. The serial number is so you can match the tag with the gun if separated and the collection number refers to my record books that have all the info. Bayonets have a hang tag with info and which rifle the bayonet goes with. Some day my wife or daughter is going to need to sell them off.

Unless I can figure a way to take them with me.

Hi Hans,
Welcome back, my friend! It's great to see you on the Forum again. How can I summarize what happened in the six years you were gone? How about this? The economy fell down and collectible rifles shot up. As long as your safe didn't rust, you're way ahead! :)

I hope your Corvette did as well.
Best Regards,
John

Got to love a safe that "produces" rifles when you aren't watching! Mine made a Win. M-90 .22 short between inspections. Made a log book, so that prolly won't happen again.

Hello John! Good to hear from you. Yeah the Corvette didn't hold up as well, but sure is a blast to drive. Probably should have bought mausers with the money, I'd be way ahead of the game. Also managed to move from Denver to Chicago and finally Southern California. Needless to say the home equity didn't do well either. Retired from my job of 30 yrs (not my choice) and started a new career here in SoCal. That's my last 6yrs in a nut shell.

How's your collection doing? Still focused on the South Americans and Spanish? Always great to read your posts. Let me know if you've run across anything interesting.

BTW, here's a look at the Gew98 I just bought on GB.
