I just bought a very nice Egyptian FN 49 in 8mm. I took it apart to clean and find the firing pin is a two piece and the bolt did not have a firing pin safety stop. Is the firing pin broke and the unit missing the firing pin safety stop? Are both needed for the Egyptian FN gun and if so should I order a one piece pin and safety pin stop?
I looked at sarco parts and find listed a firing pin one piece and firing pin extension.
Really appreciate your input and help!

Shoot it. The 8mm does not have a fpss as it is a 2piece pin and do not use a 1piece cuz' if it breaks you won't like it! Bad JuJu when that happens.

The Egyptian contract rifles were the only FN-49s that did not use a firing pin safety stop. If you have a 2-piece firing pin (see photo to make sure you have an actual 2-piece pin, and not a broken 1-piece pin), then you have the latest configuration. The 2-piece pin was a design improvement introduced by FN in response to the tendency for the original, long 1-piece pins to break, which could cause slam-fires or out-of-battery ignitions.

BTW, during original production, FN did install bolts in Egyptian contract rifles that were machined to accept the spring-type FPSS as used on the Venezuelan contract rifles. The Egyptian and Venezuelan contract rifles were in production at the same time so a rifle assembler could use a Venezuelan-pattern bolt if the supply of Egyptian-pattern bolts was temporarily exhausted. Since the contract did not call for an FPSS, none were actually fitted even though the bolt would accept one. Further, Century fitted .30-06 bolts (machined for the plate-type FPSS) to many of their rebuilt rifles and again, Century did not install an FPSS.

Thanks for the picture of the two piece firing pin Goose, I took the bolt apart and it appears the two piece pin in the Egyptian 49 I purchased was a broken one. I appreciate your information!

Kaboom results from broken SAFN firing pin

Here's what the results look like.........not fun when it happens! This is a 7x57 Md.49 that fired without the bolt fully locked. Fortunately the repairs needed weren't extensive or too expensive. But a lesson was learned.....

Make sure you have the updated 2-piece firing pin!

I ordered yesterday, the two piece pin......... the one I had when I purchased the rifle was a one piece 8mm that broke and the seller I think was shooting it that way. thanks for all the information on the fn49..........it looks like a great rifle and great piece of history! Can't wait to shoot.
