Well, las weekend I went to our club's gun show for the first time in many years to work the club table. I had a few minutes after getting there to look for Mosins, and I found 1. That's right, as far as I could tell on a quick, but thorough walk through it was the only one there. I had seen one other interesting French Mle 49\56 at a table, but I couldn't tell who the dealer was, so I went back after my shift to see what was up. It had all the bells and whistles, but I only had so much to spend and after talking with the less then interested seller I decided to go get the Mosin.

It's a 1938 and you'll have to tell me if some of my neophyte suspicions about it being all original are correct. It is a round receiver, low wall with the older stock and matching numbers. Take a look and tell me what you think.

Did you strip the shellac off the stock?

Everything is exactly as I received it. It has obviously had some "work" done at an arsenal to help it comply with the times in which it was used. The ton of markings including on the stock are very interesting if you know what they mean, which I don't yet. What you see is what I got.

If you're asking why it doesn't look like the other pictures of shiny shellac, that's just because of the lighting.

Well, it's an Izhevsk stock from the correct time period, and has serial prefixes . . . can't see the receiver serial in your pics, does the font used on the receiver serial match the other serials? Original matching or not, it's nice.

Not original, but a nice refurb that's been through East German hands.
Yes, it is sporting an East German mark. Very nice looking rifle! Looks very similar in condition to my very first Mosin Nagant, also East German marked.

This is most definetly a refurbed rifle. There are no "standard" refurb marks, but It's sporting plum colored rear site pins, and the mag floor plate is a line out.

The stampings on everything seem to match each other but not the receiver. It's evident in the "3", but does that indicate the arsenal force matched everything else or just stamped them to match the receiver? Am I correct in believing the receiver and barrel go together because they are stamped with the same date?

I haven't come across the East German significance yet, but I suppose it's written up on one of the websites I have bookmarked.

I bought it because it was a low wall and my 1942 is a high wall. That's the first thing I noticed and I had to have it because of that and the earlier date. You can see the differences in this picture.

The receiver and barrel are probably original to each other. No guarantees, but it's probable.

It looks like the other parts are arsenal matched. The bolt in particular shows obvious signs of having been scrubbed and renumbered.

Depending on who you ask, the Triangle-1 mark is either a sign that the rifle was used by East Germany or refurbished by an East German arsenal.

It is a nice example of a prewar Izhevsk. I passed on a similar rifle a while back (DDR mark and all) and sort of wish I hadn't.

I read the title of the thread, First Gun Show in years leads to new Mosin, and thought I was going to be looking at a newly manufactured 2012 model Mosin Nagant. Bright, shiny, sharp. But instead, I see a seventy-four year old and worn relic. And stamped by a republic that doesn't even exist anymore. Sheesh! Couldn't be more disappointed...

...and seriously, if that was the only Mosin at the show, you did very well to pick it up before someone else did. A DDR marked is still something I'm hoping to add. Nice work, and thanks for posting.
