Picked this up at the last gunshow. Pretty uncommon from what I’ve seen and not much info on older threads about this modification. Any ideas why was the sight hood cut open? Rifle is total mismatch, what really attracted me to it was the obvious Finned front sight, Chatellerault bolt and nice stock cartouches.

I bought one 3-4 years ago. At the time, I was still able to find good deals on Mosins. I was never able to get any definite information on the sight
--most people guessed the modification was done to keep snow from clogging the front sight or to allow for more light.

Very cool, I like that sight with the wear of the rifle. I remember seeing this modification on here before, but don’t know any specific info about them
