I've come across an Inland 1943 dated M1 carbine with an extension to the butt stock, which lengthens it by about 2 inches. The addition is joined by dovetail joints top and bottom and is made to what seems to be an original type 2 stock (oval cut, high wood). The extension is described as a period modification. Has anyone come across this modification? Why would it have been made?

Harvington, does the stock have any rebuild stamps on it? Probably made by a person with a long reach in which the regular stock was just too short for comfort, done by a experienced wood worker, not an arsenal modification in my opinion.

Chuck.
