In 1943, it would not have been a last ditch gun. I will have to check the books and get back with the answer.

Also "AC" was not a marking for Mauser, but is the code designation for Walther.

If it says 43 on the slide then it was made in 43.
German logic ...

The ac 43 and 44 slides with 140 proof marks were made at the FN plant and sent to Walther, some ac 43 and 44 slides that weren't proofed wound up at Mauser and assembled and proofed in 1945. All dual tone P 38's marked ac 43, ac 44, byf 44 were assembled along with svw 45 P 38's and are in the same letter blocks that you find for 1945 assembled P 38's. I have a DT byf 44 in the e block and a DT ac 43 in the c block. What is the letter block on your ac 43? Mauser was using up all the left over parts at the end and makes for more variations for the P 38 collector to find.
