Early Mosin receivers have a feature that was dropped relatively soon after production began. It is a drilled, tapped, and plugged hole on the bottom left of the receiver next to the recoil lug. It's purpose was to allow the barrel threads to be greased to facilitate removal of the barrel at a later date.
The purpose of this survey is to determine what years the various arsenals (Chatellerault, Izhevsk, Tula, and Sestroryetsk) stopped tapping the receivers. Any information on any 1896 or earlier receiver would be helpful. This can include original M91s, M91/38s, or receivers rebarreled by the Soviets or Finns. Some Finnish rifles have been observed without the plug. Information on the rifle and the presence or absence of the plug will help determine if the Finns typically left the plug out or reinstalled it. Please include the following information:
1. Barrel date, arsenal, and model (ie: 1893 Chatellerault M91 or 1943 Sako M39)
2. Receiver date and arsenal from the tang (ie: 1892 Izhevsk; If the date is not legible or uncertain, please state this and post a picture of the tang if possible.)
3. Is the tapped hole present or not
4. Is the plug present or not
Remember, information on post-1896 receivers is not necessary unless one is found that is drilled and tapped. The survey will then be expanded. Thank you for your help.
