Does anyone here use a trailer/utility trailer or have considered one as a prep?

Does anyone here use a trailer/utility trailer or have considered one as a prep?

I have just too much junk to haul if I have to move out long term due to another hurricane or the likes so I have been looking around and there are some pretty cool trailers that double are a trailer and a decent camp.

Many are military surplus trailers some are just standard or home built but really shall we say robust LOL

I have a couple one is stripped right now getting some work done to the floor (new supports welded in) and other basic repairs due to rust and age. The other is good to go but little upgrades like new gate and replace the fenders where some used the lip as a tie down point and to add tie down points down the sides using the equivalent of cut in half stake pockets.

Many cities and counties in my neck of the woods have laws prohibiting parking trailers on private property unless a permit is granted and then it may only be used temporarily e.g. while putting up a permanent structure. This also makes the affordable rural "go-to" property prohibitively expensive for many.
If a real T E O T W A W K I ever occurs

permits will be meaningless , at least for

the duration .

Also , I am not an advocate of '' bugging

out '' .

A trailer for a SHTF situation is going to be different from a common cargo trailer such as those you see rented by U-haul. For one thing, if you think you will have to go off road to escape whatever calamity you are trying to get away from you will need a trailer that can also go off road. There are numerous listings for both cargo and camper off road trailers on Google (here's just one: http://www.adventuretrailers.com/ ) as well as plans to build your own. I had an open cargo trailer that was made from the frame of an old pop-up camper. It served for many years for dragging my lawn tractor to the shop and moving furniture, but with its small highway tires it would not have been any use in an off road bug out situation. I just honed my bartering skills and traded it off for an antique humidor and about $150 worth of cigars.
i keep my coffee in a humidor.....have a truck.....trailers i guess i could look into one...

I wasn't even thinking about the fold out tent seeing as I already have a tent that I don't bother with when the weather is cooperating. I'm thinking cargo capacity combined with ground clearance and full size tires equals getting me and my stuff where I need to go in fewer trips or if it's a bug out I could take more stuff with me. It looks like these things are pretty expensive, so a home made trailer would probably be more obtainable for most folks. The trailer I just got rid of would have needed some reinforcing of the frame to withstand the twisting and bouncing off road, and a new set of hubs that would accommodate full size truck tires, but I'm guessing it could have been converted to do the job for a few hundred bucks.
Go to the junk yard and buy the rear half of an old pickup. I'm sure it could be bought cheaply. Weld on a hitch ....Remove rear differential and install a simple heavy duty trailer axle and there you go. A half or 3/4 ton capable trailer with heavy frame and full sized tires. Should be able to take offroad use pretty nicely.
