Not cheap for an unknown military scope.. The question is can it be brought back fom the dead.Suggestions on best way to thin the rust out would be most welcome. I am thinking light use of 000 brass steel wool and a solvent ? Has anybody ever tried a test patch of napa rust neutralizer on heavy scope rust?

Try Blue Magic Metal Cleaner and a soft cloth before any steel wool. It is much less harsh. You can get it at any hardware or automotive store.
Also, try cleaning the lenses with vodka or rubbing alcohol after you do the Windex -it takes off different grime.

So it turns out that ... the scope is a legit hungarian sniper that smells jungle...A 1954 scope, 41 marked serial 523 something...maybe even some blood induced corrsion..(will test for it before i clean it).. looks like somebody who did not know what they were doing tried to take it apart unsucessfully. they tried to remove the rear lense assembly with a wrench . reticle is good, rear lense is good , turrets do work...top one has a loose bdc grid. it is no longer attached to the turret cap... front lens has a small crack that is not noticable when looking through the scope. It is rusty as shown but will clean up within reason.

so the plan is.. i have a russian donor scope ... looking for someone to clean this scope up and possibly replace the front lens assembly with the one i have.. also need the top turret either repaired (preferred) or replaced from the one on the donor.. i could live with the small crack because it is not visible in the scope picture but there is a small piece of something inside (probably a glass chip from the front lens). my guess is someone was trying to get inside to remove it .. wondering if the lens got cracked when the owner went down.

The mount, although rusty , cleaned up nicely and is 02 and 55 in a circle marked.. a find in itself... i will put the mount on the bringback using the russian scope thats on it taking care to set it up properly by using a bore sight. Then it is off to Joop so he can tune it in properly:)...
