Did I score or get hosed on an scw?

I'm leaning towards score on this one but haven't had it apart yet, and don't have the knowledge that some of you have. It has the MP8 cartouche, and the made in USSR stamp, no other import marks. It also has the replaced front sight, and is missing the metal pieces on the hand guard. It was sitting at a table at the gun show today for 100 bucks. I asked if they would take 80 and got a yes with no hesitation so I bought it right away. Hopefully I did well, if not whats 80 bucks? Some other things of I have questions about are: The bolt that goes through the rifle has holes in it. Whats the deal with this? the sling swivels are on it, are they correct? Someone pushed the frond barrel band waaaay down the handguard and I am a little nervous about scratching the stock trying to get it back where it belongs. The bolt hast parts from at least three arsenals, is this correct for an scw rifle? Floor plate, barrel, butt, and bolt are mismatched. no cleaning rod either. anyway, its a 36' tula and I'm happy with it

You did very well for $80. What year is that Tula?

SCW rifles are notorious mix masters, so that's normal. The sling swivels are very normal. "The bolt that goes through the rifle has holes in it." ??? Do you mean the cross bolt in the stock? If so, then yes. I'd gently slide the front barrel band back in place. If you are worried about scratching the stock, try to slide a piece of plastic or something under the band to protect the stock.

Word of caution. If you intend to take the sling swivels off to disassemble the rifle, chances are they will break, bend, or otherwise not go back on the way they are now. Many SCW rifles now only have the rear sling swivel because the front one broke off or was discarded.

Do you have better pics of the front sight blade? Early 91/30s have a blade without the globe through '31 or '32. That may be home made though.
You did well. While it's difficult to discern details from your pictures (try some better lighting), it looks to be in fairly good condition and seems to have ALL of the Spanish Civil War characteristics. Is the bore in good condition? If you are ever interested in a detailed background of your rifle, check out "Arms for Spain" by Gerald Howson.

$80 is a really good price for military surplus rifle with such a rich, verifiable history. Typically they sell for $125 to $175. Now you need to try finding some more Spanish Civil War rifles, like and Mle.1874 Gras or a M1870/87 Vetterli-Vitali.
I think you scored. OK you won't retire on this one score, but it is a great bit of history for the money.
The bore appears to be in good condition with nice deep rifling, although i haven't cleaned it just yet. the front sight is obviously a replacement. Again, its a 1936(I assume these originally had globe style sights). I didn't even think about how to get those sling swivels off to take it apart for cleaning. For now I'm not going to touch them. Yes, I mean the cross bolt through the stock, it has two smaller holes on either side of a larger hole. I am by no means an expert in the ways of the camera, a better photographer has promised to swing by today and take some better pics. For the fun of it I'll post a closeup of the front sight in the next few minutes just to see if i can do any better.
Looks like a republican rebuild and is a major score. The Spanish replacment handguard is rather rare. Looks A OK to me.

I think these are better photos. i have never seen a cross bolt like this, anyone have any back story on that? The ones of the front sight are much easier to see now.

Hmmm. sounds like the standard crossbolt nut. If it's loose you may be able to tighten it with snap ring pliers.
$80 is a great deal, especially if the barrel is good. Always nice when you spot something rare and nobody else knows what it is!

Nice looking SCW. I noticed that the crossbolt is lined up directly with the finger grooves, rather than slightly off center. Would this normal for a Soviet `36 Tula?
I would drop $80 for it in a hurry ;)
cross bolt looks normal to me now, the center hole just looked a little deep to me

it's an 8
SCW 91-30 rifles can be had for what you paid to a couple hundred or so - They are often under appreciated, have seen hard use & thus languish on tables for a reasonable price, you made a great deal on a rifle with unique SCW characteristics. I have bought two, one for twice the price you paid and one for 70 bucks - I sold the 70.00 rifle for more than I paid......but not quite twice the amount ;)

Pahtu.
better pic of the cartouche

That's a darn fine deal for $80. Good deal for a normal 91/30 too. You did great! Sling slot escutcheons are pre-war screw in type. That recoil bolt through the stock looks odd for Russian manufacture as it is centered in the hand groove. They were normally slightly offset. 1936 - 1939 SCW, so it looks like you've got one that was over there. Very good example. I have a 1936-7 dated Tula that is just a mixmaster of parts. Has a SCW looking cleaning rod that looks like the round sides were filed, so it looks like a tab with a hole in it on the end.
I vote hosed, you should of held out for $75, $80 is just way too much, you know someone, somewhere is buying one $4 cheaper.... :)

Ahh yes the art of the deal is often as intoxicating as the purcahse itself.
mat!_SW, Congrats on your score as it is a great rifle. I'm still looking for one with the MP8 stamp. As Homer2 mentioned, be cafeful if you try to remove the front sling swivel. I broke mine :(
