I was thinking of making a display of an EG soldier but I only have a Soviet SKS, would a Russian sks be correct for an EG soldier? did they use some of the Russian made sks before they began making their own model?

Here are a few pics of East German Border Guards at the time of the building of the Berlin Wall.

This picture of the soldier reading the posters is interesting. Although the stock is cut for the "K98" style leather sling slot in the butt as used on the Karabiner S, upon magnification it appears that the butt stock still has its original lower sling swivel. Also the stock is not the usual later laminate, possibly a modified Soviet birch stock?

The remaining photos are also around the same time period. There is no way of knowing whether they are restocked original Soviet models (minus the cleaning rods) or Karabiner S models.

Here are a couple more pics from the drill square. The first two photos are again early NVA. The colour pic shows battered and worn carbines with original Soviet birch stocks. Note the lower sling swivel on the butts. The rifle stocks are not laminate. Note the look of enthusiasm of the first soldier in line (BW pic).

This later photo clearly shows the more familiar laminate stock of the Karabiner S.
