The AVT-40 was a temporary stop-gap measure used by the Soviets after they suffered very heavy losses after the start of Operation Barbarossa. After WWII ended, all of the refurbished AVT-40 rifles were made into semi-autos by the Soviets (it's a very minor difference) as AVT's were no longer needed, at this point the Soviet Union had a large supply of MG's and SMG's
