My girlfriend got one for $115 at a little shop in Central PA a couple of years ago.....the guy behind the counter called it an "Eastern Bloc throwaway Commie junker"....so she happily pulled out her credit card...then showed him her 10 round Bakial and I showed him my Satin Nickel IJ .380. =-) We were happy to say the least...

Its been several years ago at this point, but the 3rd or 4th Makarov I ever bought was a Suhl, new in box. I was travelling for work thru lower SC and saw a small gunshop. Stopped and looked around for a few, and saw a Makarov sitting on a blue box on the back shelf. I asked the guy what he had, and he said, "Oh I can't sell that one to you, I ordered a 9mm and they sent me some Russian POS, I'm gonna send it back" I asked to look at it anyway, and he let me. I asked him what he wanted for it, and he tried his level best to talk me out of it...Kept telling me I couldn't get ammo for it, spare parts could never be found, it wasn't safe, he woul,d feel bad if I tried to fire "regular" 9mm in it, etc etc.....I finally told him that I had another pistol in the same caliber, and had some of the correct ammo. He finally broke down and told me I could have it for what he had in it, $89 bucks plus $12 in shipping. Sad part was I didn't have enough cash on me, and he didn't take credit cards. I asked him to hold it while I went and found a ATM, and he said, "If you don't want it, just say so" I gave him about $22 bucks to hold it, all the cash I had on me at the time...drove around for about an hour looking for an ATM, and than took me another 45 mins to find his shop again...but I finally got it. Brand new, unfired in the original box. And Yes I still have it, and its in the same condition as when it left that shop. And no its not for sale.

Wow! That read was agonizing toward the end! I know you said it was the the 3rd or 4th Maks you had owned, but as the story went on, I thought for a second that it was another story of the one that had got away from you. View attachment 72517 But I remembered you had gotten it in an earlier statement. Phew! My first Makarov cost me $50 and a lifetime addiction, one I will likely take to the grave. I will not get rid of my first either. It is my daily carry choice. So, now that you have a nice gun to coincide with your handle "Makarov_EG", are you going shoot it? What kind of condition is it in? We need answers and pics Mister.

NICE! Tempting to make it a safe queen, but if it was mine, it would get at least one outing to the range. I took my PM to the range one time, put maybe 100 rounds through it, came home and cleaned it, then locked it away. I'll probably never shoot it again, but it was really sweet that one time. It gets fondled a lot still, as I'm sure that sweet Suhl will!

Hey Slim... first i wasn't trying to sell anything, secondly my info was (edited) correct. This is from your link...

Post-Unification German Makarovs

As early as the 1960s, the Russian Makarov pistol design was licensed to other socialist states, including East Germany. After the German reunification, the German Bundeswehr and republic came into possession of not only Makarov pistols, but the manufacturing site of Ernst Thaelmann in Suhl (state of Thueringen).

After some negotiations, the site became the Suhler Jagd- und Sportwaffen GmBH (Suhl Hunting and Sport Arms Ltd). The site included a substantial amount of manufacturing equipment, spare parts, drawings, and highly skilled personnel.

In 1994, the idea was spawned to once again make Makarov pistols from the existing stock of parts. One of the design features that was criticized was a cam that held the hammer in place (forward) when the safety was on "safe." This was removed on the new pistols such that the slide can now be racked when the pistols is on "safe," clearing the chamber if a round is present.

In 1995 then production of the mini-series starting with serial # 000001 began. The left of the slide was marked "SIMSON SUHL/THUR" (with Umlaut - the two dots - on the "U" in "THUR") and the right is marked with a blacksmith symbol and "MAKAROV 9x18mm". There appears to be some variation on this, since the pistols with serial numbers in the mid-400s and the ones in the 700s only say "SIMSON SUHL" without the "THUR." (see pictures below) Considering that the original production run was only scheduled to yield approximately 300 pistols and that serial numbers in the 700s are now being sold, it is conceivable that full-scale production has been resumed.

ALSO...

East Germany
The Ernst Thaelman factory in Suhl, Thueringen made what are considered by some to be the finest pre-fall-of-the-Berlin Wall Makarovs. The finish is nice, the fit and machining is of quality you'd expect from a German shop, and they shoot like a dream. Almost all that came into this country had already seen service, so their quality varies by how they were treated by the person who carried them. Nonetheless, most have more holster wear than bore wear. They occasionally still pop up at dealers and at gun shows. If you can get them for a good price, these are the ones to buy.

Markings on them include a letter 'y' with a circle of dots, which some Russian folks think stands for for uchebneii or "training". This would be strange for a German pistol, but we haven't heard any other explanations.

This is what i posted...

thats nice but im afraid its not an original pre-wall Mak. its the new one made in the late 90's. nice piece tho, worth about what u paid. The ones worth a bunch arent stamped Schul, and you cant load them while the gun is on safety, they have a brown grip and a "Y" with a circle of dots around them. Looks like this... this is a 1960 Original with original grip and factory dyed hammer and safety.

so again what did i say wrong?

oh and here is a bit of info, that it seems you dont know.. the "Y" on the german gun, actually is from the Phoenician alphabet, meaning "Hook" as in the Original Suhl firearms manufacturer of the Hook and WALL gun from the 1580, The Berlin WALL was announced to be built in 1957 and was completed in 1961 and a "secret retaliation" against the regime which was forcing cheaper labor on the east german side, one maker began to tool the "Y" into the gun. He claimed it was due to celebrate the Original Suhl gun the "Hook & Wall" however it was not the case. His name was Alex Siedel who used to be an engineer for mauser before the war began. The "Y" was a socialist protest.

heres the Wall gun..

" ... nice piece tho, worth about what u paid."

Yes, I think you need to bone up. Shop around for a Simpson Shul and report back. If you find one for $200 put it on Slim Tim's Trader and I'm sure someone will throw in a couple extra $$ for your effot.

There have been quite a few posts on what the various stamps mean on EG Makarovs. It's good to have another theory posted, however wild, but if the "y" was meant as a "Socialist protest" someone sure had stones. I looked at your link to see what was printed in support of your theory. This one:

http://www.itcwebdesigns.com/tour_germany/weapon_museum_suhl01.htm

... seems is only a link to the fact that there is a weapons museum - is additional info there I missed? The other link shows an old gun.

These guns are still widely used by many LEO's in many eastern european countries and soviet controlled areas. They didnt stop making them until 2003 and they are everywhere but here, lol, wait and see if in the next year or so the market isnt flooded with the new ones. But hey, dont listen to me, check it out for yourself.

Hey - that's real useful to know that you can buy a Makarov (not a Simpson Suhl) in Russia (or wherever that link originated)! That really helps define how much you should pay for one in the U.S.

Your second site is selling in Euros - a bit more than the 150 bucks American you claim, in fact they are more expensive than what we can buy them for here, but again the information is totally worthless to anyone in the U.S.

I can buy as many Russian un-marked Makarovs as we all need in Afghanistan (but I can't get a single one shipped to the U.S.). Should the price here establish what someone in the U.S. should pay?

I bet we could get a cheap one in Tibet too - maybe you can give us a quote. That would help.

Post Wall Unification Suhl Makarovs were only made into the 800 serial range before production was canceled. Total production was only about 1000 (they made several pre-production variants with various finishes and some in .380).

You are confusing the the Post Wall Simson Suhl Makarov, with Pre Wall Makarovs made in Suhl. While your links have some nice examples of the Makarov for sale, they are not the same Makarov, made by one specific company, that we are talking about.
But I'm sure you will say we are delusional.
I would love to be in a market flooded by Makarovs, but current Federal laws make that very unlikely.
