Just received a copy of Paul Scarlata's Collector's Guide to the German Gew 88 "Commission" Rifle.

Just perusing it, there are a lot of period photographs, as well as some good historical background on rifles preceding the Gew88. The bayonet and ammo section is very helpful.

I decided to get it after speaking with Paul about his various works, and he commented that he always felt the Gew88 book was one of his best.

Overall, it's well worth the price. I ordered my copy from Mowbray Publishing. Total was about $34 shipped.

No knock on Krag, but I was mildly disappointed- I thought it was a better book than the Mannlicher Military Rifles, but the chapter-plus of overlap between the two books on related designs was redundant, since I'd bought both.

Still, I gotta say it's my favorite of the series. Lots of cool pictures and a clear progression of history and design.

Hurray for Paul! He published two books on the two most influential and most underestimated rifles - the Mannlicher and the Commission Rifle. These books were sorely needed in the sea of misconception and misinformation that surrounded these designs.
