I acquired a Gustloff Werke KKW which is in very good to fine condition except that some previous owner wrapped black tape around the fore stock. I removed the tape but that left some black sticky residue on the wood. Is there something that I can use to safely remove the residue without damaging the finish on the wood underneath?

Never ran into such a situation but I would start with mineral spirts. There is also a product called Goo (I think) which is especially for removing sticky and even dried such residue. You would have to read label but I have never found it harmful to paint, etc. finishs. It may take some elbow graese to get it all off.
