Ariz. police and War College warns military must prep for unrest; IMF warns of economic riots
PhoenixBusinessJournal ^ | 12/17/08 | Mike Sunnucks

A new report by the U.S. Army War College talks about the possibility of Pentagon resources and troops being used should the economic crisis lead to civil unrest, such as protests against businesses and government or runs on beleaguered banks.

“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security,” said the War College report.

The study says economic collapse, terrorism and loss of legal order are among possible domestic shocks that might require military action within the U.S.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn warned Wednesday of economy-related riots and unrest in various global markets if the financial crisis is not addressed and lower-income households are hurt by credit constraints and rising unemployment.

U.S. Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., and U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., both said U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson brought up a worst-case scenario as he pushed for the Wall Street bailout in September. Paulson, former Goldman Sachs CEO, said that might even require a declaration of martial law, the two noted.

State and local police in Arizona say they have broad plans to deal with social unrest, including trouble resulting from economic distress. The security and police agencies declined to give specifics, but said they would employ existing and generalized emergency responses to

Unless there is a MAJOR terrorist attack on the way or obama plans to start something with "us" (gun owners), I just can't see this happening.
When was the last time one saw a riot in the winter??? I have seen numerous articles on this recently.
Basically, I think the sheeple are too apathetic to get off their butts to riot.

Maybe it will be all of the minorities when they figure out their "man" obama isn't going to give them free $, gas and pay their mortgages for them.

I don't think we've even seen the beginning of the economic SHTF. I hope I'm wrong.

There has been a huge increase in armed robberies of stores and individuals lately in my neck of the woods, as well as an increase in home invasions, stolen cars etc. Thugs hiding and waiting in bushes, behind cars, etc. And no, I am not on the bad side of town. On the bad side of town, they are breaking into buildings, houses, etc. and are stealing copper tubing, pipes out of the wall, siding off of houses, and any other scrap to sell. In the rural areas, farmers have been hit by theft of implements and iron out of barns and on the edges of their fields. Seems like you constantly have to be watching your back these days, not that I didn't before, but now it is taking even more of a priority. They just announced that a local plant will be closing, and there will be no re-location alternative for their workers. I do not think there will be a mass riot, but rather an escalation of what is already taking place; robberies, assaults etc. There may be some isolated protests as large plants close, but nothing widespread. I would think there will be an increase in CCW applications as people become more fearful of there security.

we are overpopulated, and as such, cannot provide for everyone. When people ooose jobs, can't eat, and start loosing homes.....things happen.

Look to nature to see what happens when populations get out of whack.
If people bought homes they could afford (like I did), and put food and money away for lean times (like I did), there wouldn't be an issue. Too bad if they didn't. Its not overpopulation, its spending more than you earn or relying on the gubmint for your money that are the problems.

Let them come.

Well said Keith.

I got debt free about five years back. Around that time I had a bunch of family, friends, and business associates telling me I was a damn fool for investing in precious metals and for not pouring all of my disposable income into real estate investments.

I did invest in a REIT, but bailed out long before the collapse. Probably way too soon, but better than way to late.

Either way, I think the nation is overdue for a serious wake up call. Maybe those old fashioned notions of prudence, self-denial, living within ones means, and savings will make a come back.

Keith, I agree 100%. If you are hurting financially, there is no one else to blame except yourself. The good Lord has blessed my wife and me, and we've made sound and smart financial decisions as long as we've been married. It just makes my blood boil that we are going to get our taxes raised (eventually) to bail out those idiots who thought that buying a $300k house on an interest-only mortgage was a good financial decision.

Just where do you live that has this increase in crime? Farmers in CA have been putting up with metal theft for over a year now.

Be safe.

Georgia.

The rural theft is similar to out there, probably ongoing for a year or so. I currently am working/living in a city where the demographics are not good: 65% Black, over 27% of population is below poverty line, roughly 75,000 population, 165,000 in the metro, several local gangs, etc. etc. Major turnover in law enforcement (mostly due to increased crime) include but not limited to Police Chief, County Sheriff and 12 deputies, dispatchers, etc. etc. etc. It is bad enough where the main street in town which is four lanes had a used car dealership with a tahoe on the street; thugs put it on blocks, stole the tires, rims, and were never caught or seen.

No, I am just saying that in nature, when populations get too large, something happens. Either a war, or disease, or starvation. Its natural. And many people would say that war is, in some ways, a natural population control.

I just think a lot of things point to some bad things on the horizon in my lifetime, maybe sooner then people think. I think our country, our culture, maybe our world, is a house of cards right now. It would not take much to blow it down.

Maybe not. We did just elect the second-coming-of-christ....

yeah, I know, that is my fear. Luckily enough though, it is not where I call home... It is all a matter of perspective too. People (even on here) may live in areas where crime isn't a everyday occurance may think everything is great, and others must be telling fishing stories, but the reality of it is that a thousand miles away it could be on the brink of civil unrest or at the very least crime ridden. Many people are full of $#*% and try to dream up things that are gonna go wrong and/or how they would react. These people are obviously out of touch with the environment they live in. Because if they knew what was going on around them, they would know the situations that most likely they would be facing and therefore, adapt or prepare. Others realize and accept the fact of their situation and make the best out of it. I am more of an optimist than a pessimist, but I never let optimism blind me from realizing situations, and I remain vigilant and aware....
