More than likely for ceremonial use. VFW, American Legion etc.
Tell your friends it was used at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and put a tag for $600 at a gun show! 馃槀

Yup. Ceremonial use. Along with white belts and holsters. Makes for a slice of history.

I had a different impression due to the removal of the crosspiece and catch. Perhaps originally plated for ceremonial use for a veterans post or military school. But I think it spent the last part of its life as a knife.
I do think it was plated as a complete bayonet though. Not turned into a knife and plated at a local bumper repair shop.
