And not just from Mauserboy when his mom dishes out the annual big bowl of Xmas beans.

Scientists warn Christmas lights harm the planet By Graham Readfearn
December 24, 2008 08:06am

SCIENTISTS have warned that Christmas lights are bad for the planet due to huge electricity waste and urged people to get energy efficient festive bulbs.

CSIRO researchers said householders should know that each bulb turned on in the name of

Dr Glenn Platt, who leads research on energy demand, said Australia got 80 per cent of its electricity by burning coal which pumps harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

He said: "Energy efficient bulbs, such as LEDs, and putting your Christmas lights on a timer are two very easy ways to minimise the amount of electricity you use to power your lights."

He said the nation's electricity came from "centralised carbon intensive, coal-based power stations" which were responsible for emitting over one third of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions.

Dr Platt added: "For a zero-emission Christmas light show, you may consider using solar powered lights or sourcing your electricity from verified green power suppliers."

I only put up a few lights this year, and I wish I had done LOTS more. It's the coldest December we've had in a LONG time. Next year, I'm going all out. I'm going to burn (in a bonfire) all those damn LED bulbs and go with the big 100 watt per bulb light strings that you used to see around the used car lots. Maybe if I can't find those, I'll go with the temporary contruction lights used on jobsites. They have a festive looking yellow safety basket around each bulb...

Same here. In the summer I like my house at 70º, winter, 72º.
Couldn't find the timer (OK didn't really even look for the damn things) so the Christmas lights usually burn several days straight. When I remember (ok when I feel like opening the garage door) I'll unplug the outside lights during the day, the indoor tree lights I think have been on straight the past two weeks. The tree is in a new spot and blocks the receptacle, to lazy to reach through the tree to pull the plug, besides I'd just have to reach through again to plug 'em back in.

DAMN! No old tire to burn, hmmm do have a 5 gallon bucket of used motor oil though.......

More Holiday Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Turkey and Bean Enchiladas
A snap to put together, these easy enchiladas also help
you use up any leftover turkey you might have on hand.

6 medium scallions, white and light green parts, chopped
2 cup cooked skinless light meat turkey, cubed
1 can (15 oz.) pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup canned enchilada sauce, or taco sauce, divided
4 medium fat free flour tortillas
1/2 cup reduced at Mexican cheese, shredded

Preheat oven to 350° F.

Combine scallions, turkey, beans and 1/2 cup enchilada sauce.

Fill each tortilla with 1/4 of turkey bean mixture. Fold in sides and then top and bottom of tortilla to completely enclose filling. Place seam-side down in a 9″ x 13″ baking dish.

Pour remaining 1/2 cup enchilada sauce over top of enchiladas and top with cheese.

Cover pan and bake until heated through and cheese is hot and bubbly, 20 minutes.

Don't forget fruit cake, one of the most noxious sources of gas emissions known to mankind.

As for Christmas lights, I am signed up for a "green generation" program with the local power company. I can use all the juice I want and, in theory, it all comes from renewable sources.

I find it interesting how many uppity 'earthfirsters' won't pay a little extra for something that's earth friendly. It's always good to goad them with it.

That should be all our goals!
It would only help out the planet. During the dinosaur period CO2 levels were IIRC 4 times what they are today (still safe for us) plant life thrived and the world was a very lush green place, even the animals grew huge.
If winters were almost non existent our crop growing seasons would be much longer even in northern areas.
With world population ever increasing wouldn't that be a good thing!!!?!!!!
Merry Christmas and a high CO2 filled New Year! :)

hahahahaha! all of my tires were buried to help make a levee. but i am sure i can come up with a few gallons of used motor oil. will that get me in your good graces? :D
A few days behind but I hope that's ok

Don't burn oil to be in my good graces. Burn oil to piss off neighbors, pollute, and be a general @sshole.
