I am looking at one of these carbines and it looks like it has a large ring receiver. * Question: are the Steyr Modelo 1912 carbines re-chambered to 762 NATO safe to shoot?

TIA for any info...

Perfectly safe to shoot as long as headspace checks OK. The 1912 is a true M98-type action and will easily handle the 7.62-NATO or .308-Win round. I think the accepted designation of these short-rifles is "Model 1912/61".

Greetings D.J.F. You know I might have one of those in the back of my safe....Are you interested in buying one?? I will have to look tomorrow, as I cant remember if it was converted to .308 or is still in it's original caliber.

The one I have is not only safe to shoot, but is as accurate as any military rifle I have ever fired. That being said, any older rifle should be checked over for safety issues before firing. They will handle NATO 7.62 just fine. Some of the higher pressure factory loads may push the limits however.

7.62 Conversions by Chile

Over the years, there have been many posts on the Chilean 7.62 NATO conversions done by Chile on their M95 and M1912 Mausers. The best information on the conversion is on Dutchman's "House of Karlina" website ( http://www.rebooty.com/~dutchman/ ), the best site in existence on the Swedish Mauser. He has a small section on the Chilean conversions of the M95 Mausers and you would do well to read it carefully - look at the pictures as well. While the gun illustrated is a small ring M95 and as such is only marginally safe with the NATO round and the M1912 is a large ring, plenty safe with the higher power 7.62 NATO, it shows an example of the work as done on all of the conversions regardless of the type. I respect his opinion and the work he has done. The article on the Chilean NATO conversions can be found here:

Make the decision to shoot your gun based on the info provided and close examination of your rifle, as I said above, the M1912 is an exceptionally well made, large ring M98 type Mauser and should be safe to shoot if the problem shown does not exist in your particular example.
