Was cleaning my newly acquired Ross M10 and ran across something odd. "clear" cosmoline. It’s almost like silicone but is definitely cosmoline.

Did the Canadians use a different type of cosmoline?

Called 'Vaseline' or 'white petroleum jelly' in the US.

I thought so too but since it was exposed to air overnight it has "yellowed".

Very odd but grateful that it hasn’t tarred up.

Believe it or not, this seemed to be the product of long time storage in Canada many years ago. A few item that I have acquired over the last 10 years were packed with white grease and it is not military. It was a commercially available storage grease sold in Canada. I suspect it was quite prevalent in the late 70's early 80's as several items I acquired that were in long term storage from this period were all packed with white grease.....hope this helps....
