the unit or meaning of a SMLE brass stock disc with "A" stamped at 12:00 and "276" stamped at 5:00. One website indicated that the "A" stands for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders -- anyone care to corroborate or dispute? What about the numbers? I asked this question in an earlier post, but it was buried with other questions and didn't get very many responses. Thought I'd try again -- this time making it a single thread. Thanks.

While an Argyll connection is possible, I tend to doubt it in this case, "A.& S.H." being the usual designation. Unit descriptions tend to be more complete than just a single letter or digit. Offhand, I'd guess the 'A' could be a company designation, with the number the rack location or property number within the company area.

I also think the info is too light on. Company/ storage/ rack number is more likely. Can you get the disc out? It may have an earlier issue marking and was turned and re-marked in it's "next life".
