Raised as part of the Royal West African Frontier Force in 1900, originally as a single Battalion, but swelled to 5 battalions in WWI.
In WW2 the Gold Coast Regiment were engaged in Ethiopia/Somaliland against the Italians and their Colonial 'banda', where it gained special praise for it's conduct at the battle of Wadara, one of the hardest battles of the campaign. Later they were employed in the Burma campaign.
A neighbour served as an officer with them in Burma and often remarked the West African Division received scant praise for their contribution in what was known, amongst others, as the 'Forgotten War'.
Pullienes Rangers were a Boer War unit.
