Aussie collectors - I am sure you have heard of using oiled bronze wool to remove rust freckles from rifles before. It is 100% SAFER to the metal finish than using steel wool, as the bronze wool is SOFTER than the metal, so will NOT scratch it unlike steel wool which CAN. As many of you know who went to Bunnings, Mitre 10 looking for it will know, you CANNOT buy it here, at least readily anyway.

Well, I found a good source for it. It's not cheap at $15 for 3 large pads, but it'll never rust and lasts for YEARS.

You can get it from www.amcsupplies.com.au

I paid via credit card and it was here the next day in QLD all the way from Adelaide.

WELL worth the money. Mauser collectors have been using it for MANY years.

actually you need to be VERY careful with the scratchy pads, as most have stuff in them that will scratch steel, look at what they do to stainless steel pots
if you check out specialty wood working places they tend to have bronze wool.

I have found the steel wool, if used correctly, will only remove material that was doomed to come off at some point anyway. The correct use would be with plenty of lubricating fluid, a very light touch and constant cleaning of the pad. I like to use an oil/solvent combination like Break Free CLP, Ballistol or even Hoppes. It also helps if the part has been soaked for some time prior to using the wool on it to allow time for the solvent to penetrate the failed metal and to lift organic off the surface that will only clog the steel wool.

3M markets a "no-scratch" synthetic pad for use on teflon pots. That works well with a light touch when dipped in Hoppes. The Hoppes makes the food taste funny though.

That's really useful advice Lewis, thank you. I wasn't aware of this option.

Good thing Lithgows don't rust (LOL) !

Hope you sold all your butter knives last weekend. That must have been the worst gun show I have ever been to,

Cheers,

Mark

I wonder if those Mr. Clean magic erasers would work...Might try one on an old piece of metal just to see...

Ace Hardware in USA sells it very cheap. You will have to ask for it and don't expect anyone who is age under 30 in the store staff to have
a clue. "I know you carry it, get the manager" is the go for the throat solution in Virgina.

Everything BUT the butterknives HA HA.

Not quite THE worst one, but close. Howard's previous to this was THE worst, followed by Danny's first one. Both of those sucked eggs royally - didn't even come close to making TABLE cost at those 2!
