Today, MUCH to my surprise the little lady told me she wanted to start hunting. Don't ask my why, but she decided she wanted to bow hunt for turkey. I have always been a gun hunter so I don't know anything about bows. Can anyone give me a good book/website to start doing research? Thanks!

My Advice,as thats all I have to offer, is thus;

Do EVRYTHING you possibly can to help her and get her happy on Hunting!!!

I would first start by finding a good pro archery shop and talk with them about different bows and handle some and see what feels best and ask if you can try some.
You don't have to buy some $800 fancy new bow.
The pro shop will set you up with a rest,sight,arrows,string silencers etc and should give you some target practice to get your bow set up correctly.
Other than that it's just practice practice and more practice.
If you want to set up a range at your house I'd suggest a good target to shoot at like the block 4x4.
As far as books I never bought any,I mostly learned from the pro shop staff they'll teach you alot.
There's some good tv shows on outdoorlife cnannel that have tech tips etc.
The main thing is get out to the woods and enjoy!

Try http:\\huntingnet.com\forum ..............if you get a low weight (45lb) compound bow and she uses a mechanical release she should be able to physically do it....but hunting turkey's with a bow is a lot harder in my opinion that hunting deer with one......

Wish I knew how to bowhunt turkeys.

I can't hunt deer because I don't have a big freezer, so that limits me to birds. I like the idea of trying to call turkeys in close enough to shoot them with an arrow.

I recall seeing a video by Matthews Bow company a few years ago. It's the brand I'd like to buy if I can ever get anyone to teach me how to do this. Maybe they offer some instructional stuff, too?

yep, like spu07 said, easier said than done..... even seasoned bowhunters find it difficult to bag a turkey, they need to be real close so they don't jump your arrow.

Yo Ladies & Gents,

I second the motion on the pro shop. Find a good bow shop and then try a variety of bows. They generally have samples that you can shoot in the shop. It most certainly DOES NOT need to cost a lot. I bow hunted for years with a Pearson 90 lb. compound bow that I bought on special at Montgomery Wards years ago on special for $65!

I shot everything up to and including kudu with it in Africa along with deer, pigs and yes........one turkey!

But let me tell ya, PLEASE!!!......get her interested in deer and pigs! You can hunt pig the year around and deer from a stand with a reasonable success rate! Turkey with a bow is graduate school i.e. the PHD of bow hunting. I have killed a single turkey which I stalked on foot and shot from behind from about 30 yards. NOT EASY!

The last thing you want her to do is become frustrated and quite. Get her a bow she can handle and go with a mechanical release and sights and it's like shooting a rifle with a REALLY POOR trajectory. It's a hell of a lot of fun!

Best of luck to you and the little Lady! Valentina hunts with me, but she doesn't like to shoot. She will help gut and skin, and is an excellent shot, she just doesn't want to shoot anything herself! It's wonderful to share the experience with your best friend.

See if there is an archery club in your area. They can be most helpful with minimal expense until you and she decide that is really what you want.

I bought an $80 bow at a garage sale, joined a club, and wound up taking second place in the winter indoor league. We had outdoor shoots twice a month with 28 3-D targets from various angles and tree stands. That was a great way for me to learn.
