I have bnz 4, single rune: 6635G. Mostly matching except for the bolt. This one has almost no bluing, good bore but oddly (?) foresight protectors like vz-24s that I have seen. I noticed that none of the other listed examples have letters included in the serial #, am I missing something?

Thanks Pisgah

I am bidding on a bnz 44 without a suffix that is on the unusual list. So I will presume that it is rare rather than suspect.

I Presume Rare

In Law's book he states that single rune rifles were on 43,44, and 4 bnz's. Plus a bnz 44 with no letter suffix and no waffenamt on top of the receiver is an SS contract K98k. Anyway you look at it this is an SS example.

Except Law's book has a lot of errors in it, and much of his research was based on a single example...take his data sheets...they are a good guide and starting point, but as I said, many were based a SINGLE documented example. Hard to draw an substantial conclusions from a single example....

I am not making judgement on any rifle, just saying you must be careful when using Law for conclusions....

I'll just add this: Yes, you can find bnz44 single runes, they do exist. However, that style of rune only shows up on RC rifles, and that exact rune is the one that shows up on the wrong type of rifles, i.e. bnz42 single rune RC's, bnz43 single rune RC's, etc. These "unusual" single rune guns are almost all suspected of being fakes by those that collect this variant.

I've been wrong before, but I can assure you that there will be no single rune guns with a final acceptance on top.

Is this one an SS contract? I would say yes, it is- but the rune is not original in my opinion. Take that for what it's worth, I could be wrong, but I trust myself on it.

It would be interesting if all of the RC's with this rune came from 1 place.

New member here. I have six Mausers, four of which are K98's, and one is a SS bnz 1943.

Serial number 8301
RC
RGuns import
single rune on floor plate, serial #4277
SSZA4 marked front left of receiver on barrel

(also Commission 88/Loewe1890, Gew98/Danzig 1916, S/42G, 147/Suhl/1940, and DOT/Brunn/1944)

Cole's

Well this one came in to Coles. The distributor Coles has a good reputation, and he brought in a great many RC SS proofed K98k rifles. The seller said he picked it fresh out of a crate for $600.00. He said he is no expert on these variant's so maybe it is a fake rune. But the rifle is for sure an SS contract rifle with proofs in all the right places for a real single rune rifle bnz 44 large font serial number 3199. I compared the rune to the examples in Law's BBOTW and it looks the same. So I bought this RC bnz 44 single rune for $490.00, and I think I paid a good price for it. Sometimes you just have to go with your first impression. I think this one is legit.

Sounds like you have an SSZZA4 made from new parts there- different animal than a Single Rune. Post up some detailed pics of it so we can discuss it. The RC's are a great way to obtain some rare codes and variants, but none of the parts are original to the barreled receiver.

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I read great members knoledge in this awesome forum. Just started now posting on the Mauser section since I'm Argentine and love 1909s but lately I've been studying the K98s since I want to get one with the variations I liked in the future... and after reading kinda too much to digest it (after all it took you several years haha!) I was wondering if the single rune no matter the model was only found on the States since couldnt locate one among the few I saw down here. Just the only thing I couldnt read of and knowing there are ppl from everywhere in here there may be some members that know for sure that their single rune rifles didnt come from the States but need the confirmation. Thanks in advance and keep you reading! :)

Farb can probably answer this much better, but single runes and SS contract rifles were pretty rare in the states too, until the influx of Russian Captures, then many showed up, granted typically the only data to be gleaned was from the barreled receiver since RC's are total mixmasters otherwise.

Generally, I would think this is due to a couple of reasons....most of the rifles went East, as the bulk of the Waffen SS was fighting on the Eastern Front (although certain units, like the 1st, 2nd, and 12th Waffen SS Divisions moved back and forth between East and West several times during the last couple of years of the war, the 9th and 10th fought in the West too, although they may have stayed in the West for the duration, I don't remember exactly of the top of my head)...so most rifles stayed there.

Thus the few real SS rifles that found themselves in the states were probably captured/picked up from the relatively few Waffen SS units that fought there.

When the Russian floodgates opened, there was a sudden influx of SS rifles since they had captured many of them there....of course once they found out that these rifles brought quite a bit more $$$ than a standard, all of a sudden there were even more flooding in, many being faked by enterprising Russian and Ukrainian humpers, as Farb alluded to in aniother post, after gleaning knowledge from boards like these as to which ones to hump, and how to mark them.

I would think real SS rifles would be very rare down in your part of the world....

Just my $0.02
