Now that I've got your attention,

My family drinks water from those larger plastic jugs (like Hinkley etc..). These are the kind that you can place in the refridgerator and they have a tap in the bottom of them and you have to pierce the top with a knife. We go thru about 1 jug a week. I was wondering if there is a way I can seal them again to store my own water. Or, rather than throwing them out, what other uses do they have.

Another question, can screw top wine bottles be used for storing water?

thanks in advance,

Jugs

Johnjohn, We camp in the Everglades a lot. and what I do is rather than poke a hole in the top I take a small drill bit on a T handle bore a tiny hole and press one of those plastic wallboard anchors into the top. It lets it vent and then when you refill or transport you simply screw one of those little screws with the wing nut head and a small 0 ring (Home depot) into the anchor I even keep mine fixed with a small length of fishing line tied to the handle of the jug. If your freezer is not full and you want to save on power fill them with water and freeze them. It fills up the air space and if you have a power outage they will help keep things cold for days. Hope it helped.

If you use a knife for the puncture wound , then if you do not already have one , buy a 10 dollar soldering iron from walmart . LIGHTLY run the iron along the slit & voila it is re-sealed . I even use a soldering iron to seal our BBQ plastic gallon jugs . Ya just need to practice a little in welding plastic together instead of metal . Easier than it sounds BTW .

Yeah!!!!!!! Booyah!!!!!

Now I should just have to boil water for ten to fifteen minutes and let cool. It should stay good in the jug for three to four months, no? Then I could just rotate my use of the water and redo, no?

We haul water into our house with 35 gallon garbage cans, that are only used for water from the start.35 gallons is easily taken up stair to the house by two people.
Guess you could line a "used" barrel and be happy.
Now that we have local water and sewer hooked up, we only haul water in to drink, straight out of the river. Tastes good, and no Kemikill tastes. Nopolution or sickness in our rivers this far North (Yet!) and its a general practise.
water stores nicely as Ice, in blocks and chunks outside the door as well, if your in a cold situation.
You can store the barrels inside each other as well.

Boy, you rascals up there must be tough. Just 30 gallons in the barrel is 240 pounds. If you carry that around regularly, your chiropractor will love you.
