I'm looking at a rifle that looks a lot like a Beaumont, but has a "flattened" bolt that I've never seen on a Beaumont before? It is dated 1886.

Anyone familiar with this rifle?

I was thinking that, but Jeez, the mainspring is in the bolt handle. It is not like flattening a Mauser bolt knob or something..

Sure looks like a Beaumont-Vitali, with some modifications. Before blaming Bubba, consider you may have some kind of rare variant. Is there a legible stamp on the right side of the buttstock?

That is in fact a Beaumont Vitaly. I read up on the safety mod's they did on those late in their service and matches what you have. The flattened bolt...I'm unaware of any mod that required that.
