Being new to this forum, I thought Id start by sharing some of my WW2 collection items. (didnt post the Arisaka's monopod and cleaning rod).
I mostly collect WW2 aviation items (pilot gear and cockpit avionics), but I do have some Japanese and German WW2 arms.

What I hope to inspire, is to have others post their Japanese arms and field gear (if thats OK too, do have a field telephone and binoculars too).
If the moderators are up for it, Ill post my Japanese Zero cockpit items.

Anyways, this is all I gots and can afford folks...

Enjoy, admittance is free.

So sorry... ,how insensitive and politically incorrect of me.
Id edit the title to amend the "Jap" short hand that can be misconstrued
as a pajorative, but its outside my control.

As a aside, Ive married an Asian gal. Ive been to Tokyo, Nagoya, Koyoto.
My wife has forced me into eating uncooked fishys, crab, and hoofed animals. So no harm meant.

So do others post their collections? Id be very interested in that.

Back on topic...
Ill get around to posting my Zero stuff too, being theres interest.

Heres a J A P A N E S E gunsight site that Ive contributed to...
http://gunsight.jp/c/index.htm

Enjoy.

Actually you can edit your title; just go to edit, then 'go advanced'; you can edit the title from there.

Nice display of your Japanese collection.Looks like you`re off to a good start in collecting
Firearms Of The Rising Sun.It can be addictive, but this site is the most informative about
the subject as you will ever find. Most of the time answers can only be given through
seeing a photo of the item in question, and it looks like you`ve already mastered that
skill.Good Luck,AV8R_ .

Charlie

P.S. Please do show us any pictures of your Japanese Avionics gear.

OK ill ask a stupid noob question related to my own collection...

How the heck is the lower hanging curly fastener/clip on the sword belt
hanger used?

I dont see a secondary eyelet to hold the lower part of the sword
scabbord from swaying to connect to.

So either its used for another kind of scabbord, or it clips to something Im
not aware of. Anyone have an idea, or better yet, a picture?

Thanks

AV

Since you asked. It's also a chance for me to annoy camera illiterate Jareth ;)

Where in Commiefornia are you? I'm in the Santa Barbara area. You should check out the Phoenix show this coming weekend :D

Hmmm, I'm starting to envy the camera illiterate. Took about 9 attempts to get these damn photos posted. WTF happened? It used to be so easy!

Thanks for the responses...

JCLTB,

So thats how this is supposed to hang off the belt. I was wondering how
they intended to keep a sword/scabbord on the belt with just the hook alone.
I would have never figured that out on my own, thanks so much.
Also, by going the extra mile, you basically crafted a manual on this lost art.
What else can you share about these swords, do you collect them?
I found a really great book on them whilst in Japan. Explains the history
and how each type is made and documents the styles. (In English).

Your post is worthy of a HOW TO sticky, if I were king.
Thank you. This is the kind of community tude that makes forums great.

ARISAKADOGS,

What a fantastic museum you have. The one with the sniper scope is my
favorite. There is a guy that wrote books on Japanese army and airforce
gear, he has a home museum like you do. Gary Gila if I remember correctly.

Whats the story behind your interest in Japanese WW2 Arms?
I have a field phone and binoculars and map case too. What kind of
accessories do you have?

Someday, Id like to get a scope on mine to finish my little collection. If
you have a scope that isnt in prime condition and want to let it go, pvt
msg me. I dont have to have pristine condition items.

Im in Chino Hills, where the 5.4M earthquake and wildfires hit this year.

You don't intend on mounting a scope on your nice looking Type 99 do you? :(
Thems fight'in words around here!
Save up and get a real Type 97 or 99 sniper rifle if you want a scoped Arisaka... or buy a rifle that Bubba has already put a scope on.

Forgot to add, I'm also a Kalifornia Kaptive. I'm north of you and Adogs.

OK I understand. It took me about 3x reading your response CW, before
understood the sacriledge I may have committed in the area of putting a
scope on a non-sniper rifle. Got it. Again, so sorry.

My area of expertise is WW2 aviation, and I guess my noobiness in things
field is showing. :p
Well, this how and the place to learn.

I guess I get just as hot under the collar when someone mixes IJN and IJA
airforce items. It technical and yet theres a proper place for things.

While we are discussing Arisakas...

I have a monopod for my T99, but it looks like I have one of two avenues
as to installing it.
a. remove the original band and put on the one that came with the monopod.
b. remove the needle pin that holds the monopod to the band and just
install the monopod on the original band already on the gun.

- What sayeth the experts here?
- Whats the best way to remove the pin? Use a punch?

Hello AV8R :

Welcome Kalifornia sufferer, am east of you in Rialto, San Bernardino County, east on the I-10/210 corridor.
You have been to the Chino Air Museum ?, quite a few IJN goodies. Yes Gary Nila is quite an author and authority on Naval and Aviation, he is in Lakewood, another writer is Henry Sakaida in Temple City.
There are over 40 Banzai members who collect Japanese Militaria here in the State and many of them also contribute to this Board.
The monopod itself pivots on the rear barrel band by way of a pin, so if you have a monopod that is still attached to the band, just drive if off with a 3/32 pin punch and install it on the band in your rifle.
Note that a complete monopod for a T-99 short rifle includes a 3 sided spring and a screw and nut. The spring provides friction to the monopod and keeps the pivot pin from coming out ( hides it ).
If you need to talk snipers I am your man, I collect not only snipers but have from T-18 to T-I, as well as standard rifles of WW2, bayonets, and a fair number of other country snipers. My daughter Linda collects ammunition and ordnance.

No need to appologise and excuse me for not being very clear. The collecting community tends to frown on non-original modifications. Restoration is good, but adding scopes and other gadgets is not.
Re: your midband/monopod: your Type 99 should have staked screws. Most of us advise not to turn them unless you absolutely have to. It is far easier to swap out the monopod than to remove the midband.

If you haven't already, you should pick up "Military Rifles of Japan" and "Bayonets of Japan" for your library. Both authors are members to this forum and you will learn a great deal from just reading their posts. Welcome to the forum!

Sharing with like minded buffs...

Vicasoto,

Glad to meet cha.
Ive been a member of the http://www.planesoffame.org and regular at
the Chino AirShows for quite some time now, with my little girl in tow.
Aviation has been a love affair of mine for quite some time and the history
and study of air combat has been both a hobby and pursuit.

Below is me next to my favorite a/c of all time, its Japanese so I guess I
get to legitimately post it here. ;)

Back on topic,
Id like to see some close ups of your sniper rifles and scope views.
And what is unique about a sniper version from what I have?

Thanks, I've been at it for quite a while now. Ever since my Dad, a Pacific WW2 vet, bought me my first Japanese rifle back in the '60s.
Gary is a good long time friend of mine & I'd like to see his collection sometime.
Sounds to me like your next step is to get a few books to get learned up on this stuff - there's some great references out there & I think you'll enjoy them.
I love that A6M5 as well & went down there a few years ago to watch it fly.
