O.k. guys, I'm offering these links I've come across in the last week or so regarding lubrication for semis, both pistols and rifles. I will probably incur burn damage from some members because the idea of using auto-grade, synthetic products is sacriliege to many. So far, I've been very happy with what I've found and used. For modern weapons, I shoot Glocks, a 1911, and an AR-15 in 6.8 SPC.

So, here's some interesting info on 'alternative' lubes for those of you who are interested. Flame away...

I wouldn't flame you for such a notion. It's my belief that American society is obsessed with substituting technical fixes for behavioral problems. In this case, I mean substituting 'magic' lubes for the necessing of recurring maintenence. Tt ain't the wonderous product with which one lubes ones weapon, but the fidelity with which one does it.

I sent a close friend of mine who was serving in Vietnam a M1911A1. He told me he wiped down his sidearm three times a day with lube, field stripped it and cleaned it once a day, and every week or two detail stripped it--he was gun-saavy enought to know what he was doing. Everyone in his battery remarked at his "new" looking .45 His lubricant of choice--GI motor oil.

I'm not sure if it really matters what you use to lube. Just as long as you keep it lubed. I take all of my weapons out of the safe about every two months and run a light oil patch through the bore and oil the pins and such and then wipe them down with and oil rag even if I haven't fired them. Just to keep them lubed. On the wear parts after firing I use a light coat of military gun grease.

I use RIG grease. IMHO much better for long term protection than oils since the lighter lubes always seem to develop freckles/pinpoints of rust. Supposedly Eezox is even better but i just don't feel like going through the degreasing process on all my guns to apply it.

Looks like, in short order, the ideas of lubrication and rust prevention have become tangled together in this post.

For lubrication, about anything is often better than nothing. Automotive synthetic oil, moly grease and such items are dirt cheap compared to pricier gun lubes. In usual practice, you clean, lube and stow your firearm, ready for the next range session. Afterward, you wipe off that recently applied and little used lube during cleaning and reapply more of the same. In this instance, the automotive stuff works fine, and a quart of synthetic 30 wt + a 1# tub of moly bearing grease makes perfect economic and practical sense & will last you the rest of your life.

OTOH, For storage, use the stuff intended specifically for the job. RIG has been long regarded as best choice & in over 30 years of use, has never let me down.
