I was in a pawn shop buying a k98 and saw a Argentine 1909 . The action and barrel where still full of cosmo , it had cleaning rod and a beautiful stock with clear stamps , and all numbers matched that I could see and no import mark . Overall a very nice looking rifle , worth 299.00 ? I don't know anything about these, so any feedback would be great .

A lot of these were imported prior to the 1968 gun control act that required all imports to be marked with the importer's name. Many were in unissued condition with all matching nos. down to the cleaning rod. If the one you are looking at is one of the all-matching unissued rifles, $299 is less than half of the actual value.

Run back there with a cleaning kit and clean the bore, a lot of these have pitted bores, and a lot do not. One at the last Eugene Oregon show and the only 1909, they wanted $600 for. The action and floor plate alone is well worth the $299. Good luck.

I,d def look into it. Look to see if it still has the crest on the rcvr, and see if it's still in 7.65x53. If it has a good or decsent bore and the other I mentioned,, Id def grab it.

I am going to go back on fri with a cleaning rod to run a patch thru it . It still has the crest on it , do they mark the 30.06 conversion ? I was not planing to buy it but it is just to nice looking of a rifle to just leave there .

If it was an Argentine conversion, it should be marked 30.06 on the receiver. If it was a later one done by an American importer, it may be marked on the barrel, or not at all.

If it's still in 7.65 and all matching (bolt, forward tang of the triggerguard, stock, cleaning rod), $299 is a very nice price.

That is a great price if it's original. Check to see if the cleaning rod matches too as often they do. The receiver and bolt should be "in the white" as in not blued. Many of the small parts will have a bright "fire" blue finish.
Check the pic's below.

There is something beautiful about a 100 year old mauser that is like new, my brazilian 1908 is mint and sometimes I just sit for an hour marvelling at the quality.

For the record, JimmyC's example is the gold standard by which any 1909 can be judged. If it's all matching and original, but happens to have a blued receiver, don't pass it up, as this is somewhat common.

Much thanks to 1911guncrazy............here she is!

Saturday I made the 98 mile drive to Athens, Texas to ogle the 1909 mentioned in the OP.

While not perfect, this is the nicest 1909 I've handled.
The rifle appears to have never been fired. It was packed with cosmoline, but shows loss of bluing on the rear sight, bolt release and the front receiver bolt. Most of its "wear" appears to be from storage and not actual use. The front receiver ring has an odd cloudy stain.

Price tag was $299. I got it for $254.96.

Looks good. How hard was it getting the special bayonet adapter off to dismantle the gun?
