I have a set of AR Triangular Front Handguards as used by the ARs which were first issued in Viet Nam. They are in new condition. A friend would like to buy them as he is building a "Viet Nam era" AR but I have no idea what a fair price would be. Appreciate any help. Thanks.
Apex has them in "good" condition for $50, which seems a little on the high side to me. I've seen em' advertised in G to VG condition for around $35, and a thorough web search would probably turn up a set in that condition and price range. A while back I sold a set similar to yours (Excellent condition) to a board member for $25.
I just attended a show this weekend as a dealer. The fellow set up next to me had two very nice sets (no chips, cracks, scratches etc.) with a $40.00 price tag. He sold one set for $30.00 and took the other home. I think there's a limited market and more available for sale than the demand for them.
Depending on what you are into them for and how good of a freind he is......$20.00-$30.00 would be fair.
I too am also building a retro rifle. handguard sets in that condition are easily fetching $50-$60 on gunbroker. I paid $150 for a VGC A1 set a few weeks ago. one reason for my purchase was the flawless A1 buttstock in unissued condition that was part of the set. I would say $20-$40 but depending on the friend a gift would not be out of the question.
I know they are hard to find in unbroken condition. My brother picked me up a set when I was "restoring" my Colt SP1 back to it's original configuration. He hooked up with a buddy who had over 100 of one side in unbroken condition but only 2 of the other side that weren't cracked. I don't know why one side is more prone to cracking than the other. My brother purchased an M16 directly from Colt when he had his Class 3 and it came out of the box with a cracked hand guard. If you can find a pair in uncracked condition buy them.
