I have this AR with a new upper on it that'll neatly pile spent brass about 3 ft away in a 2ft diameter forward right of me when firing. It's uncanny how neatly it does this. Steel case is tossed to my rear right, erratically but I'm not concerned over how Russian ammo behaves.

What I find intriguing is that with the older upper, the brass casings will be tossed farther away and with more enthusiasm using the same bolt/carrier and since I'm still getting used to the new one I am now starting to wonder if neat piles of brass near the shooter is not as a good a sign as it appears to be.

Thoughts?

if it aint broke, don't fix it. may be recoil spring, BCG drag/weight, extractor. last time i shot, russian steel went about 7ft in the 2 oclock, my reloads went about 6 feet in the 4 or 5 oclock.

Had a sniper NCO that used to correct shooters off where the brass was flying, and he was usually correct, he said it was easy, you watch them shoot doing everything right, and know where doing it wrong sends the brass. And I've seen brass chucked 20+ feet on the firing line

You are correct. In relation to where the brass lays on the ground is a good indicator where the rounds are hitting on the target. Used the same method to coach my Soldiers on the zero range. Its a good indicator that you are using the same sight picture and applying all the fundamentals properly!

My rifle is normally fired off of 7" bipod in the field. So that is pretty close to the ground but it piles it's brass nearly on top of each other about 3 feet from the rifle. If I find one I'll find them all. The only exception is the last round in the mag. Its usually "out of the group".
My 49-56 is entirely a different story. It may or may not group the brass I don't dare try. It throws them about 20 feet. I use a trout landing net. :)
