As a followup to this post I wanted to share how to make retaining rings when there is nothing on the market. This time I needed a 34mm threaded ring for the ocular lens assembly but it seems like 34mm retaining rings are not easily found - there are 33.5 and 34.5 rings available but no 34mm.

So this is what I did - I found a 34mm to 52mm filter adapter for camera filters for about $10 online to act like a base;

Its a aluminum ring so it can be modified. I put it in my lathe and reduced the outside to 34mm - and look what came out - a perfectly good retaining ring to use as a replacement for a broken or missing ring.
