So I picked this up. Other than what I think is maybe a paint/cerakote job, appears to be a nice original 1918 /original barrel assuming at some point it was a re-arsenal.. am wondering how (or if) I can get this off to restore it.. bore rifling looks used but fine give it an 8.5/10..

I have one same barrel date, serial number a few hundred lower. I has an even coating of frosting on most of the metal.
I was told that it may have been due to exposure to chlorine gas. Nice story. But this is the time period that they shifted to a magnesium parkerized finish.

It doesn't look painted to me. Just an old, 'weathered' finish. The 'mottling' on the bolt body and receiver rail seen in the second picture appears to be old, fine, rust pitting that was cleaned up quite some time ago.

No type of 'paint' would be that intact on a 1903 bolt that had been stroked a few hundred times after such paint was applied. The fit is too tight.

That just looks to me like it was parkerized over existing pitting. You can try coating it in CLP and going over it with a Nylon brush if you still think that it's paint. That way you could scrape off any paint if it is there (I don't think it is) without harming the parkerized finish.

I had hoped it might be an "original" rifle, but it appears to be in a WW2 M1903-A3 stock. Here's some info from the SRS records:

1017853 11/30/18 SAMPLE PARKERIZED RIFLE
1017950 06/25/31 USMC

1018145 07/30/23 165TH INF NYNG TO RARITAN ARS

Thanks.. Im pretty sure this thing was a re-arsenal at some point due to the bolt which I think they bent 10 deg or so reward at the turn.. also what are SRS records?
