Hello,
My name is Paul. New to the forums. just bought one this morning. Gotta wait the mandatory 10 days of course due to Kalifornia but that's ok. I can wait to play.
Have been looking around here and other sites learning about the Mosin. the one I picked out had a uniform stock. (not repaired) Didn't get the markings writen down though :( Didn't kow there was that much to know.
Curious as to how many have bought theirs through them and if they were good decent rifles? (meaning the ones they sell) Bore looked good. Nose was shiny however. Like maybe it was chrome lined or something?

the condition of the rifles is more up to their history than where you buy it. i have bought a m44 from there that is in very good shape and shoots really well.

have fun with it and take good care of it.

Welcome to a new Mosin junkie! I used to troll Big-5 when I lived near one and got a nice, all matching M38 from them. If you want to learn more, check out 7.62x54r.net for excellent info. Just a bit of a warning, you can't stop at one!

Greetings as well from Illinois. I purchased my first Mosin/Nagant, at Dunham's today, a 1943 Izhevsk 91/30, matching numbers on the bolt, buttplate and magazine floor. The buttplate doesn't fit the stock well, although the stock itself is in fair condition. I can pick it up after 10 central tomorrow. Any pointers other than the obvious clean it, shoot it, clean it, shoot it some more (and don't leave it in the closet)?

Mr68gts,
Welcome to Gunboards. I feel happy for you and sort of concerned for you at the same time. The latter is largely due to the fact that once you get your rifle and bust some caps you'll never be the same. Especially when the addiction starts and you just can not own just one Mosin. Make sure you have your budget well planned cause that one rifle will need lots of friends to keep it company.

Clean it some more! don't put it away after firing until it's cleaned of corrosive ammo residue or you will find rusty junk instead.

I would say 80% of what I have bought has been from Big 5. Take a look at the "carbine" thread for examples.

Big 5 buys from Century Arms. These will be good, to very good refurb examples of Soviet workmanship. I have had the opportunity to go through my whole collection today getting ready for a gun show. The Big 5 rifles that I have bought are shooters. They are collectible. You can, and will find some really nice examples, and somewhat rare finds for a good price. Somewhat inflated, but still a good price.

Don't worry about your purchase. Welcome to the boards. :)

By the way. NO, not chromed, bore or otherwise. Just polished steel at best.

Just joined the board today because I saw it had a section for these guys. And yes, got mine from Big 5 for the Black Friday deal of $79!! It's a 1942r Izhevsk. It is in very good shape. The bore is absolutely immaculate. I'm not sure it has ever been shot since re-arsenal. Shinny, no pitting at all and clean as a whistle with clean even rifling. Can't wait to finish the work I have planned for it and start shooting. This is going to be my first project gun.

Have you ever woke up next to a girl you didn't like to look at? Be ready for those that agree with you, or not.

I have bought a few from Big 5, but mostly from the sponsors. (Curse that C&R. :D)

The last one was a 91/59 for $139 about a year ago.

BTW: Big 5 has some of their employees shoot the various guns at my local range, and we love to have them there. And no, I have not offered to buy those heavy rifles off them so they do not have to carry them back to the store. At least not yet. ;)

I am on good terms with the sales managers at all the Big 5's in my area. They all know what I want, as soon as I walk in the door. I am always polite, thank them for their efforts in hauling all the boxes out from the back room, and if I find one I like, I buy it. Knowing my interests, some will try holding back an interesting rifle until I stop by.

Almost half of my collection has come from Big 5. In the last year, I have found several ex-snipers, a 1944 Tula M44, and a few early hex receiver M91-30's (ex dragoons).
