So I'm pawing over a new item the wife brought home from the FFL in Kotz, and its got some stamp, dang it, I cant decipher.....CAI import, Izvehsk made 1939, tight muzzle, nice bore, no pits, but used and taken care of, no number on the floorplate, with no 'D' but an SA and Finn stock, sweet trigger matching # and font bolt, # is not on knob, but were they ever on a 91/30?

So the letters along the front of the reciver....any clue?? L.P.Gar. sp1919

Just wanna get to know this guy a bit better first, then I'll try shoot it some, when I get time....

That is a very nice Finn-acquired/ Finn stocked Soviet 1891/30 rifle you've got. The letters along the side of the receiver look like those odd Latvian/ Lettland marks that show up every now and then. A cleaner close-up on "macro" on the camera might help. My sense is that is what those are. Probably one of the 91/30s supplied by the Germans to Finland during the Continuation War and then [SA] Finnish army property marked.

Nice one!

No clue on the first part, but sp1919 is probably the serial number of the rifle, stamped on the receiver when import marked.
Nice rifle, I love the Finn captured 91/30's.

So "Macro" is the little flower setting for close up......and now I know........ :D

Looks like a better picture, for sure. Also looks like the sp1212 is a serial applied after import on top of the blue, but the L.P.Gar. is under the blue and mucho older.....
Looks like sp1212 is a slightly messed up 4212, with the font the way it is.

I agree.

There is a board member from Italy who has great insight into translating the Latvian markings - I'll see if I can dig out an old thread that he contributed to....

I agree with wrench that the SP1919 is just the cyrillic SP1919 serial number being put into Latin alphabet letters at import...

The [F?]LP Gar would be one of the Feuer Losch Polizei or FeuerSchuetzPolizei marked Latvian/Lettish Mosins during the Nazi occupation of the Baltic states. Perhaps Gar can be added to known Mi[tau] and Ri[ga] markings once it can be determined what German name for a Latvian town or district it might be... Good luck with the research!
