This is the second Springfield I have run across in the last year or so. Too bad someone ground off the US Govt property mark. The hammer appears to have been repaired. But the small S proof marks are where they are supposed to be. Although I think the S on the hammer is suspect. I'm wondering how much the value is effected regarding the Govt property mark being ground off?

They were made for only three years during WWI. I think about 25 thousand and are much harder to find in original condiition than a Colt. The one posted here was made probadly in 1915. The other one I have was made in 1916.

I too had a very nice condition Colt M1911 that had the US PROPERTY marking filed off. They both probably came home in a soldiers duffel bag. Sadly the defacing effects the collector value a good bit as it's no longer all original. How much is hard to say I guess it would depend upon how much a prospective buyer wants a Springfield Armory M1911.
