All matching (everything) BUT Bubba put a scope on it years ago!
the bore is like new...

The wood is very dry...
Question 1: What should I use to preserve the wood?

Question 2: how can I get that black stripe off the rear of the stock?

I am guessing the black is from a slip on recoil pad or a cartridge holder?? Try some turpentine to get the black off. The wood should be fine is has been around 60 plus years without any help. Unless you plan on taking it out in the rain it should be fine.

No to turpentine. Yes to Howards.....apply with a soft rag and see what happens to the black. DON't get too agreessive with anything on the stock as it looks like a nice original finish, and there is no need to mess that up. If some Howards does not dislove the black in one application try a second or third after a few days. Take your time and go slowly. Better slow and safe than fast and sorry. The black may never all come off, but better a little black, than a messed up area of the stock from too agressive cleaning.
