I recently received a letter from the USDA confirming that this m/96 handguard is mahogany. I found it in a box of loose handguards, and picked it out because of the purple / red tint to the wood color, and because the grain didn't look like walnut to me. After studying pictures of known mahogany stocked rifles, I suspected it was mahogany, so I took a small sample from the underside and sent it in for analysis. The serial number, 375330, dates it to 1916. Now if I could just find the rest of the rifle.
