nd much of that should/must be laid at the paw of one Lowell Thomas.

He did some other books that are worth reading and then looking for better factual coverage. A couple of examples would be RAIDERS OF THE DEEP and COUNT LUCKNER, THE SEA DEVIL . Books are good reads, and can encourage research into the subjects.
Clyde, as a Texan, I'm sure you are also familiar with Thomas' book This Side of Hell, which is the story of Sgt. Dan Edward a WW1 MOH recipient. It's an excellent read.

Didn't Thomas also write the authorized biography of Sgt. York?

SMLE Alert! Lots with the Empire troops of course - and also with the Arab "regulars!"
An SMLE on the Mount of Olives.

In the last year someone posted a pic of Israeli kibbutz girls with SMLEs during one of the wars; might have been some of the same rifles!

There is the amusing incident when the Turks retreating up the railway towards Amman, surrendered to Aussie troops. As there were insufficient troops to protect them, they were partially rearmed to keep the Arabs at bay.
