Hi everyone,

I have this odd-looking M91 (still undergoing cleaning) which has had the socket altered to form a flange. It has been very neatly done, and the original MR diameter has been retained. I did wonder that this might have been done to make it fit another rifle (I bought it in Turkey so anything is possible!). Has anyone seen anything similar, or can anyone provide an explanation?

TIA for any information!

AndyB,

That's what I thought, but it's been hammered into this specific shape, as it's very neatly done and perfecly regular, so it's not the result of the socket having been used to hammer something else. I just don't understand why anyone would want to make a flange there!

Yes, there is a crack there, but I don't see how use as a hammer would have produced such a regular shape. As it is, GBF member Shipping steel has suggested to me that because of the regular shape of the flange and the lack of any change to the MRD, then the flange could have resulted from somebody having to hammer the bayonet off a barrel after it had got stuck there. Sounds reasonable to me!
