Been through it. An attempt by the company that has the "encoding" patents to make $$$$. It's been shot down everywhere so far.

Why not have a tiny number engraved around the firing-pin hole of everybody's gun?

Why not take your tiny file or stone and remove that tiny number before you go and commit a crime? Or what if you jacked the gun or bought it from some guy in an alley and you don't care?
Or what if you don't use a gun but an IED, a rock, a bottle or a knife?

I've got a better idea. How about having everyone's shoes engraved with a tiny number on the sole and heel? That way you could instantly identify the perpetrator of a crime, regardless of what weapon was used.
