was reading something about 7.62x53r ammo vs 7.62x54r ammo, I was wondering if my Finn rifle can handle the 7.62x54r, I have a Finn Tikka 1940 m91 and wasn't sure if the ammo will work in my barrel? sorry for the dumb question, but I don't want to blow myself up, and if anyone can clarify the difference between the two I would be greatful. My barrel is marked M91 7.62R Finland and CAI St. Alb. Vt toward the end of the barrel close to the muzzle ( I did some research and found out this is the importers mark)

thanks for your help

Richard, I wouldn't have any problem shooting 7.62x54r in a 1940s Tikka. The main difference in the cartridges is the bullet diameter, with the 53r being .308 and the 54r being larger at .310 or .311. All of the 1940s M91s I have seen have all had .310+ bores so they shoot the surplus ammo with no problems. Of course, the only way to be 100% sure is to slug the bore and luckily it is easy and very inexpensive to do.

+1 Flyin Brian.

Here are two dimensional drawings of both the 7,62x53R and 7,62x54R. Note the difference between L3 and G1 in picture No. 1 and L3 and G1 in picture two.

7,62x53R .308
7,62x54R .310/.311

Always better to ask a dumb question before you do something dumb.

Here is Oz there is a CHRONIC shortage of factory 7.62x54R ammo (400 Sellior & Bellot rnds left in the country, $48/20rnds, Highland no longer make them, no othr factory brands available), and brass is about $2.90ea (norma or lapau only)... if you can find it

I found 100x 7.62x53R Sako unprimed brass cases for $200

will this be ok to reload and use in my 1932 M91/30?

if so, should i use .308 or .311 projectiles?

i only have a Lee Classic Reloader in 7.62x54R

Is this a joke or a real question?

no, a real question.

ive been told the 53R was just the finnish rounded down, and the 54r was the russians rounded up.

from wikipedia:
Differences between 7.62×53mmR (Finland) and 7.62×54mmR (Russia)

Comparison of Finnish 7.62x53R and Russian 7.62x54R cartridges[/LEFT]

  • Round length: 77.00 mm (54R: 77.16)
  • Case length: 53.50 mm (54R: 53.72)
  • Rim diameter: 14.40 mm (54R: 14.48)
  • Bullet diameter: 7.83 mm (54R: 7.92)

so thats round length difference of 0.0063 inches, case length difference of 0.0086 inches, rim diameter difference of 0.003 inches and a bullet diameter difference of 0.0035 inches

ive been told everything from its fine, they are interchangeable, to the whole thing will explode in your face killing your entire neighborhood

As you can see in post #3 there is a difference. But for your intended use which if I understand you correctly is to make 54R ammo with 53R brass, would be OK to do. You may want to run the brass into your sizer die to open the neck up to 54R dimensions.

I still don't understand your situation though. Is it illegal to buy brass from another country? There is plenty of new brass here in the US and you can get once fired too. USPS has flat rate boxes that ship international. I know if over a certain weight the shipping is more but $200 for 100 cases? You got to be kidding !!!

Gotta ask, where is this place with terrible ammo prices and dreadful supplies of factory ammunition?
Australia.

its not a common cartridge, but even the common stuff like 308 or 223 is still WAY WAY more expensive than what you guys are paying

factory .308 costs me between $28 for the cheapest hunting (federal and highand) and $70 (match grade) per 20

would love some links to websites selling it, but im fairly sure to imprt brass into aus, you need an imprt permit.

our government over here deems all gun owners to be potential killers who must be restricted back to next to nothing.

the extreme left party (the greens, enviro hippies) want to introduce a 3 gun limit, and as it stands, only primary producers and professional lhunters are allowed semi autos. limitations on gun ownership is insane, im licenced to own bolt action centrefire and rimfire rifles only, and each purchase is subject to a 28 day waiting period, and the acceptance of my reason for acquiring it.

i also have to prove i have access to greater than 50 acres, and signed permission from the owner to use the land before im allow a rifle for use outside of a rifle range.

if you rifle range licenced only, you cannot hunt with it, that requires the above permission, and a change to your licence, which thankfully, i have

WOW!!!

This has gone from a simple thread about the differences between 7,62x53R and 7,62x54R to who killed who.

Joke or no joke I, find it inappropriate especially when a new member (BTW WELCOME) has difficulties obtaining brass for a caliber that is available for us here in the US on a more abundant scale. I agree with you Northwest9 that the price is outrageous and more common than most of us realize it is for you in Australia.

I am willing to help you out in a more civilized manner.... I have some 7,62x54R once fired brass (WIN and Priv) that I could send you and it is on the house. PM me.

Northwest, is it possible to ship fired brass (ie scrap metal) to OZ? I would not mind sending some scrap 1/2 way around the world for recycling, after all I need to be environmentally friendly. Send me a pm.

Sorry Richard, genocide is not amusing.

I do realize it was ment as a joke; but it is kinda like saying to an American "Well you did kill off the Indians, and enslave Africans." We all have parts of our nation's history that we are not proud of. We shouldn't pour salt in these wounds that we ourselves are not responsible for. Mistakes were made in the past that present generations had nothing to do with. We should be sensitive to these subjects, not poke fun at them........ On the other hand, if ya wanna make Whitney Houston crack jokes it is not to soon for me.
